2. How It Works
Dexlansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion.

cells, inhibiting the final step of acid production in the stomach.

4. Side Effects

 Heart medications: Digoxin
 Anticancer drugs: Erlotinib, dasatinib, nilotinib

6. Indications
Dexlansoprazole is indicated in patients 12 years and older for:
 Healing of erosive esophagitis (EE): Up to 8 weeks
 Maintenance of EE healing & heartburn relief: Up to 6 months
 Treatment of non-erosive GERD-related heartburn: For 4 weeks
7. Contraindications (When Not to Use)
 Hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or any component
 Concurrent use with rilpivirine-containing products
 Severe hepatic impairment
8. Precautions
 Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration to minimize risk of
complications.
 Risk of Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea, especially in hospitalized patients.
9. Warnings
 Warning 1:
Risk of osteoporosis-related fractures (hip, spine, wrist) with long-term PPI use.
Patients should follow osteoporosis treatment guidelines if at risk.
 Warning 2:
Monitor magnesium levels prior to long-term use, especially if using digoxin, diuretics,
or other hypomagnesemia-causing drugs.
 Warning 3:
Long-term use may impair vitamin B12 absorption, leading to B12 deficiency.
