How it Works:
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide laxative. It:
 Draws water into the bowel, softening stool
 Promotes bowel movement
 Is not absorbed into the bloodstream
 In hepatic encephalopathy, it lowers blood ammonia levels by promoting its excretion in
the stool
Usage and Safety
Dosage:
 Based on Lactulose
 Dosage should be individualized as per condition and patient response
Side Effects:
 Diarrhea
 Flatulence (gas)
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Abdominal pain
 Electrolyte imbalance (especially with prolonged diarrhea)
Drug Interactions:
 Thiazide diuretics
 Steroids
 Aminoglycosides
 Amphotericin B
(These can increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance)
Indication:
 Constipation
 Hepatic encephalopathy (a liver-related brain disorder)
When Not to Use:
Do not use if:
 Allergic to Lactulose or any ingredients in the formulation
 You have galactosaemia or gastrointestinal obstruction (unless directed by a
physician)
Precautions:
 Caution in patients with unexplained abdominal pain
 Caution in lactose-intolerant individuals
 Diabetic patients (especially with high-dose treatment in hepatic encephalopathy)
Warnings:
1. Hydration is important — Drink about 2 liters of fluid daily
2. In diabetes, high doses may require adjustment of antidiabetic medication
3. Monitor hydration and electrolyte status if used long term or with diarrhea
