How It Works

When Not to Use
Avoid in patients with:
Severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or on dialysis
Metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis
History of serious hypersensitivity to empagliflozin or metformin

Warnings
1. Lactic Acidosis
A rare but potentially fatal complication
Watch for symptoms like malaise, muscle pain, breathing difficulty, drowsiness
Often occurs in cases of renal dysfunction or dehydration
2. Hypotension
Due to volume depletion from empagliflozin
Monitor in elderly, renal-impaired, or patients on diuretics
Assess and correct volume status before starting
3. Ketoacidosis
Rare but life-threatening, may occur even in type 2 diabetes
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, and unusual fatigue
