How It Works:
Empagliflozin is a Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
SGLT2 is a protein in the kidneys responsible for reabsorbing glucose into the bloodstream.

Dosage:

Dosage may vary depending on kidney function and concomitant medications

Side Effects:
Very Common:
Hypoglycemia (especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas)
Common:
Genital infections (e.g., vulvovaginitis, balanitis)
Urinary tract infections
Increased urination
Itching (pruritus)
Uncommon:
Volume depletion
Pain or burning during urination (dysuria)
Slight increase in creatinine or decrease in eGFR
Rare:
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

Indication:

Warnings:
1. Hypoglycemia:

2. Urinary Tract Infections:
Can increase the risk of serious UTIs, including pyelonephritis or urosepsis. Monitor and treat promptly. Discontinue if infections are recurrent.
3. Ketoacidosis Risk:
May occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, and rapid breathing.
Do not use in type 1 diabetes
