How it Works
Empagliflozin inhibits Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2), reducing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys. This lowers the renal threshold for glucose and increases urinary glucose excretion, helping to reduce blood sugar levels.

Usage and Safety
Dosage:
Empagliflozin, as prescribed.
Side Effects:
Very Common: Hypoglycemia (especially when combined with sulphonylurea or insulin)
Common: Vaginal moniliasis, vulvovaginitis, balanitis and other genital infections, urinary tract infection, generalized pruritus, increased urination
Uncommon: Volume depletion, dysuria, increased blood creatinine / decreased glomerular filtration rate
Rare: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

Indications
Monotherapy: For patients intolerant to metformin when diet and exercise are inadequate

Known hypersensitivity to empagliflozin or excipients
Severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis

Precautions
May cause intravascular volume contraction leading to symptomatic hypotension, especially in elderly, renal impairment, low systolic BP, or patients on diuretics.

Warnings
Hypoglycemia: Risk increased when combined with insulin or insulin secretagogues. Dose adjustments may be required.
Urinary Tract Infections: Increased risk of serious infections; monitor and consider discontinuation if recurrent.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis: Not for type 1 diabetes or treatment of DKA. Discontinue if DKA suspected. Interrupt treatment during major surgery or serious illness.
