How It Works
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by irreversibly binding to the
H⁺/K⁺ ATPase enzyme on the gastric parietal cells. This action inhibits the final step of gastric
acid secretion, effectively reducing stomach acidity and relieving associated symptoms.

Precaution
 Long-term use (especially >3 years) may lead to vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin)
deficiency due to malabsorption.
Warnings
Warning 1:
Prolonged use may cause hypomagnesemia. Monitor magnesium levels periodically, especially
in long-term therapy.
Warning 2:
Chronic use of PPIs is associated with increased risk of osteoporosis-related fractures (hip,
spine, wrist). Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible.
Warning 3:
Avoid concomitant use with clopidogrel as it may reduce clopidogrel’s antiplatelet efficacy.
Pregnancy Category
Consult a physician before use. Esomeprazole is generally considered safe in pregnancy, but
medical supervision is necessary.
