How it Works
Gaviscon is a dual-action formula:
1. Neutralizes stomach acid: Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate reduce excess
acid in the stomach, relieving discomfort.
2. Forms a protective barrier: Sodium alginate reacts with gastric acids to form a gel-like
layer that floats on top of stomach contents, preventing acid from rising into the
esophagus. This can last up to 4 hours.
Dosage
 Contains Sodium Alginate and Sodium Bicarbonate (and calcium carbonate in some
formulations).
 Use as per packaging instructions or as directed by a healthcare provider.
Side Effects
 Common: Stomach cramps, gas (flatulence)
 Rare: Skin rash, hives, itching
 Serious (uncommon): Breathing difficulties (suggestive of allergic reaction)
Drug Interactions
 May interact with other medications.
 Important: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications,
especially within 1–2 hours of taking Gaviscon, as it may affect absorption.

2. Electrolyte Imbalance: May cause or worsen hypophosphatemia (low phosphate).
