 Treatment of Hyperuricemia associated with gout
How It Works:
Febuxostat is a potent, non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor.
It lowers serum uric acid levels by inhibiting XO, which catalyzes:
 Hypoxanthine → Xanthine → Uric Acid
By blocking these steps, febuxostat reduces uric acid production.

Dosage:

Gouric Tablets – Precautions and Warnings
Precaution:
 Not recommended for patients with:
o Ischemic heart disease
o Congestive heart failure
Warnings:
1. Gout Flares on Initiation:
 Gout attacks may increase when starting febuxostat due to urate mobilization
 Preventative treatment with NSAID or colchicine is advised at the start
2. High Uric Acid Production Conditions:
 Use is not recommended in:
o Malignancy-related hyperuricemia
o Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
 Risk: xanthine accumulation in urinary tract
3. Liver Monitoring Required:
 LFTs recommended at 2 and 4 months post-initiation and periodically thereafter
