How it Works
Tranexamic acid competitively inhibits the activation of plasminogen by binding to the kringle
domain, reducing the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin (fibrinolysin). Plasmin is an enzyme
that degrades fibrin clots, fibrinogen, and other plasma proteins including procoagulant factors V
and VIII. Tranexamic acid also directly inhibits plasmin activity but requires higher doses for
this effect.

Indications
 Treatment of hemorrhage or risk of hemorrhage due to increased fibrinolysis or
fibrinogenolysis
When Not to Use
 Known hypersensitivity to tranexamic acid or any excipient of the product
 Acute thromboembolic diseases such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism,
cerebral thrombosis
 Fibrinolytic conditions following consumption coagulopathy, except where predominant
activation of fibrinolytic system is present with acute severe bleeding
Precautions
 Assess risk factors for thromboembolic disease before use
 In patients with history or family history of thromboembolic events, use only if strongly
indicated and under strict medical supervision
Warnings
1. Use with caution in patients on oral contraceptives due to increased thrombosis risk
2. Avoid in patients with irregular menstrual bleeding until the cause is established
3. Convulsions have been reported in association with tranexamic acid treatment
