⚙️ How It Works
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly binds to H⁺/K⁺ ATPase
enzymes in gastric parietal cells.
 This inhibits the final step in gastric acid secretion, leading to a marked reduction in
hydrochloric acid and increased gastric pH.
 Provides relief from acid-related disorders and promotes healing of the gastric lining.

 As directed by a physician
 Usual adult dosage: 20–40 mg once daily, depending on condition

 Headache

🚫 When Not to Use
Contraindicated in patients with:
 Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or other PPIs
 History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., angioedema, anaphylaxis, bronchospasm,
urticaria, acute interstitial nephritis)
⚖️ Precautions
 Long-term use (>3 years) may cause vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) deficiency due to
reduced gastric acid needed for its absorption.
⚠️ Warnings
⚠️ 1. Hypomagnesemia
 Rare with long-term use
 Monitor magnesium levels, especially with diuretics or digoxin
⚠️ 2. Fracture Risk
 Long-term or high-dose PPI therapy may increase risk of osteoporosis-related fractures
(hip, wrist, spine), especially in elderly
⚠️ 3. Interaction with Clopidogrel
 Avoid concomitant use; may reduce clopidogrel’s antiplatelet efficacy
