How It Works
Septran contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which work synergistically to block
bacterial folate synthesis. Sulfamethoxazole inhibits the use of para-aminobenzoic acid in
dihydrofolate synthesis, while trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase. Together, they
prevent bacterial DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, making the combination bacteriostatic or
bactericidal depending on the infection.
Usage and Safety
Dosage:
Administered as prescribed. Active ingredients: Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (oral
suspension formulation).
Side Effects:
 Common: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, dry mouth
 Gastrointestinal: Gastritis, glossitis, pancreatitis, stomatitis, pseudomembranous
enterocolitis
 Hematologic: Leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia (megaloblastic,
hemolytic, aplastic), agranulocytosis
 Skin and Hair: Alopecia, rash, purpura
 Others: Vision disturbances, weakness, fatigue, insomnia, epistaxis, myalgia, arthralgia,
rhabdomyolysis, edema

 Anticoagulants: Warfarin

Indications
Indicated for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including
respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, and soft tissue infections.
Contraindications
 Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulfonamides
 Megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency
 Pregnancy (at term) and lactation (risk of kernicterus)
 Infants under 2 months of age
Precautions
Use only when bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to reduce the risk of
antibiotic resistance.
Warnings
 Use with caution in patients with renal or liver impairment, folate deficiency, severe
allergies, or bronchial asthma
 Ensure proper hydration to prevent kidney stones or crystalluria
 Discontinue use and seek medical attention if watery or bloody diarrhea occurs, even
several weeks after completing treatment
