How It Works:
Septran DS is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination:
 Sulfamethoxazole inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolate by blocking paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA) utilization.
 Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, preventing the conversion of
dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate, a key step in DNA synthesis.
Together, they provide a synergistic bactericidal effect.
Usage and Safety
Dosage:
As prescribed by a physician, based on age, weight, and infection severity.
Side Effects:
 Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastritis, stomatitis, glossitis, abdominal
pain
 Hematologic: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, megaloblastic anemia, hemolytic anemia,
purpura
 Musculoskeletal: Arthralgia, myalgia, rhabdomyolysis
 Neurological: Insomnia, fatigue, weakness, dizziness
 Others: Alopecia, vision disturbances, edema, photosensitivity, rash

Indication:
Used to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by
susceptible bacteria.
When Not to Use:
 Known hypersensitivity to Trimethoprim or Sulfonamides
 Megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency
 Pregnant patients at term
 Nursing mothers
 Infants < 2 months of age
Precautions:
 Avoid unnecessary use to reduce risk of antibiotic resistance
 Use with caution in renal or hepatic impairment
 Monitor folate levels in high-risk patients (e.g. elderly, malnourished, chronic alcohol
users)
Warnings:
Warning 1:
Use cautiously in patients with renal/liver disease, folate deficiency, or severe
allergies/asthma.
Warning 2:
Ensure adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria and kidney stones.
Warning 3:
Post-antibiotic diarrhea (including C. difficile-associated diarrhea) may occur. Seek medical
attention if severe diarrhea develops during or after treatment.
